Introducing vSmith, the new virtual application delivery platform

The Office of Smith IT is pleased and excited to announce the official launch of vSmith after piloting for several months among various sections of our community.

vSmith is a virtual application platform, similar to SmithApps, that allows us to also provide full virtual desktops containing the standard applications that both students and faculty/staff use.

Here are some other platform improvements:

  • vSmith can accommodate many more users at once.
  • More resources are dedicated to each session to provide an even better user experience than SmithApps.
  • Integration of TerpDrives allows you to save your work directly to Google (Smoogle) Drive, your UMD Box account, Dropbox, or Skydrive accounts, as well as your individual Smith K:\ drive and departmental O:\ drive.
Applications currently available in Smith Apps are also available in vSmith. New applications will be made available in vSmith, only. We strongly encourage you to check out our new virtual application platform and would appreciate any feedback you might have.

To get started, visit the Workspace portal at workspace.rhsmith.umd.edu, sign in with your University Directory ID and select the application or desktop that you would like to try. When you are prompted to install the VMware Horizon View application (for Mac or PC), accepting all the defaults. If you do not install the client when prompted,  you can later find download links and instructions here.

For assistance with vSmith, email us at helpme@rhsmith.umd.edu, call 301-405-2269, stop by our Office located in 3520 VMH or see the vSmith website at vSmith.rhsmith.umd.edu.

Thank you.

respondusRespondus 4.0 has now been published to vSmith for faculty and staff at the Smith School. Respondus allows you to design exams into a format compatible with Canvas (and other ELMS).

Note that when you run Respondus it will create a folder on your personal K: network drive called K:\Respondus Projects where it will save your work by default for later retrieval. Check the http://training.umd.edu, Course Catalog, Learning Technologies Institute for offerings of the “IIT-Respondus” workshop or contact elms@umd.edu if there are any issues using Respondus.

There was a system outage overnight to upgrade vSmith to the latest version. Although the work has been completed the initial synchronization that shows everyone their applications in the portal is taking longer to complete than expected. Therefore if you login to the Workspace Portal for vSmith and do not see your applications (or are unable to login to the Portal), please use the workaround below to view and launch your applications by running the Horizon View client directly.
  • For Windows users, click Start > Programs > VMware > and either VMware Horizon Client or VMware View Client depending on the version you have installed.
  • For Mac Users go to Finder > Go > Applications and launch the Horizon View Client

For both Mac and PC, if no server is listed in the client click the + sign in the top left corner and enter desktop.rhsmith.umd.edu and then Connect. Enter your University Directory ID and password and you will be logged in with access to all your normal applications. Launch the application you wish to use and continue as you normally would when using the portal.

vSmith – new Workspace Portal has launched!

We are pleased to announce today that we have launched a new updated version of the vSmith Workspace portal. When you visit workspace.rhsmith.umd.edu you will be taken to a launch announcement page where you can select to use the new portal, or continue to use the old version (the old version will remain available for a couple of weeks to allow our community to make the transition over at their own pace). If your browser has cached the old Workspace portal you can access the new one with this direct link: workspace3.rhsmith.umd.edu

With the new portal you can bookmark and build a library of only the apps and desktops that you most frequently use so you can access them more quickly. There’s no need to upgrade the vSmith VMware Horizon client that you currently use to open apps and desktops, and your applications will continue to work as they previously have.

Please note that we have brought forward the public launch of this updated service as an issue with the previous version last night was causing some ‘access denied’ error messages for some users. While our engineers are refreshing the databases to resolve the issue, anyone affected by this can use the new Workspace portal immediately.

If you have any questions please contact the Office of Smith IT Service Desk at helpme@rhsmith.umd.edu or 301-405-2269.
Thank you

SERVICE ALERT: Issue saving files to Google Drive in vSmith and lab/classroom computers, workaround is using Box

From:   Office of Smith IT

Dear Smith Community member,
We have received reports of an inability to save work in vSmith as well as lab/classroom and conference room computers directly to Google Drive. We have determined the error is occurring outside of systems we can control and have escalated the issue to the engineers who run the service at campus IT. As a workaround, or additional storage space, you can use your UMD Box account to save work to when using vSmith or lab/classroom PCs. To be able to access Box you will need to authorize the service by logging to Terpdrives at kumo.umd.edu with your University Directory ID and password and under Box click the Authorize button.
You will now find a new drive letter in vSmith and lab/classroom PCs when opening and saving files that goes direct your Box account. For more information on using Box or accessing your saved files through a web browser, follow the link to the UMD DivIT knowledge base article on Box.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing and are working to restore normal service as quickly as possible. If you have any questions please contact the Office of Smith IT Service Desk at 301 405 2269 or via helpme@rhsmith.umd.edu
Thank you
